  • · Martini- Henry was the first New Zealand-bred horse to win the Melbourne Cup (1883). This year will be 125 years since that first milestone
  • · In 1890 Carbine carried 10 st.5lb to win in record time from the largest ever field of 39 runners
  • · Apologue (first New Zealand owned winner) had a surprising win in 1907, and in 1916 Sasanof won (this was the first horse bred, owned and trained in New Zealand)
  • · The brilliant Nightmarch won in 1929
  • · Phar Lap won in 1930, starting as the shortest price favourite in the history of the race and winning on all 4 days of the Flemington Spring Carnival
  • · The  next New Zealand-bred winner was Wotan who in 1936 started at 100 to 1 and ran a record time
  • · The 8 year old gelding, Catalogue, won in 1938, having been only thought of as miler up to then
  • · Hiraji won in 1947 and Foxzami  in 1949, both bred at Trelawney stud
  • · Dalray carried 9st 8lb to win in 1952
  • · In 1954 Rising Fast made it a double, with the Caulfield Cup under his belt. The following year he was beaten by Toparoa, a 7 year old New Zealander
  • · Success again followed in 1957 for Straight Draw and  Macdougall (Trelawney) in 1959
  • · Trevor Knowles trained Hi-Jinx, another Trelawney horse, to win the Centenary Melbourne Cup in 1960 
  • · Even Stevens won in 1962 to become the 5th horse to complete the Melbourne / Caulfield Cup double
  • · Polo Prince (Trelawney) ridden by Ron Taylor took the 1964 Cup and Galileemade it number 6 for Trelawney stud in 1966
  • · Silver Knight (the 7th Trelawney bred cup winner) took the cup in 1971
  • · The 1970's continued the dominance of New Zealand-bred horses with 5 of the 10 winners in this decade bred here. Cambridgemare Van Der Hum took the cup home in 1976 Gurner's Lane (by Cambridge Stud's Sir Tristram) produced the first Melbourne Cup winner for Cambridge Stud in 1982
  • · In 1983 Kiwi (originally bought as a stock horse for $1000) put the small NorthIslandtown of Waverly on the map winning for trainer Snow Lupton, under jockey Jim Cassidy.
  • · The following year Black Knight, sired by Silver Knight, takes the cup  
  • · 1988 saw gigantic mare Empire Rose of Whakanui Stud add another notch to Sir Tristram's belt, having run second to winner, Kensei in1987
  • · In 1997 Sir Tristram's famous son, Zabeel, produced his first Melbourne Cup winner in Might and Power, bred at Windsor Park Stud 
  • · Jezabeel, another Zabeel, trained by Brian Jenkins won in 1998 , with Bob Emery's Champagne, also by Zabeel, placed second
  • · Yet another Zabeel progeny, Zazabelle placed third in 1999
  • · The Millenium saw Brew produce Sir Tristram's third winner of the Melbourne Cup
  • · With the victory of Ethereal in 2001, Sheila Laxon became the first woman to train a winner of the Melbourne Cup, delighting the mare's owners Peter and Philip Vela
  • · Efficient, the striking grey colt, purchased at Karaka from the Curraghmore Stud draft and trained by Graeme Rogerson, produced a Melbourne Cup win in 2007. This was Zabeel's third progeny to collect the coveted cup, equalling his father, Sir Tristram's record.
